Dara Khosrowshahi Steps Down from Aurora Innovation Board to Focus on Uber

Dara Khosrowshahi, the CEO of Uber, has decided to step down from the board of Aurora Innovation, a company known for its advancements in autonomous vehicle technology. This decision, detailed in a regulatory filing on Friday, is part of Khosrowshahi’s initiative to concentrate more on his core responsibilities at Uber and scale back on external commitments. His resignation took effect this past Tuesday.

Aurora has clarified that Khosrowshahi’s departure from the board is amicable and not due to any disagreements with the company. The relationship between Uber and Aurora has deep roots. Back in 2020, Uber transferred its self-driving division, Uber ATG, to Aurora. As part of this pivotal deal, Uber not only gave up its equity in ATG but also invested $400 million into Aurora, securing a 26% stake in the merged entity. This arrangement led Khosrowshahi to join Aurora’s board.

“Our collaboration with Aurora remains strong and continues to evolve through strategic partnerships,” said an Uber spokesperson.

Uber maintains a robust connection with Aurora through its freight brokerage platform, Uber Freight, which links shippers with carriers. As of June, both companies announced an exciting multi-year partnership aimed at integrating trucks powered by Aurora’s cutting-edge technology into the Uber Freight network.

However, Uber’s collaborations in the realm of autonomous vehicles aren’t limited to Aurora. They have also established a partnership with Waabi, another self-driving truck startup founded by Raquel Urtasun, who formerly spearheaded research and development at Uber ATG.
