Google’s AI Evolution: DeepMind’s New Role in Accelerating Innovation

In an effort to speed up its AI development, Google is refining its AI team structure. As part of this initiative, the AI Studio team and the team working on the API for the Gemini model series are now moving under Google DeepMind. This reshuffle, announced by Logan Kilpatrick, head of product for Google’s AI Studio, signifies a strategic consolidation in Google’s AI efforts.

  • Google DeepMind was established in 2023 after merging Google’s DeepMind and Brain teams.
  • The teams involved are known for their work on innovative products like Gemini.
  • The transition aims to enhance collaboration and expedite the research-to-developer pipeline.

“This move will allow us to double down on our already deep collaboration and accelerate the research to developer pipeline,” Kilpatrick explained.

Jaana Dogan, an engineer transitioning to DeepMind, shared her excitement about making their work more accessible. She highlighted that this realignment will lead to improved APIs, more open-source projects, and enhanced tools. Dogan emphasized that these changes are just the beginning of what’s to come.

  • The shift is expected to make DeepMind’s work more publicly available than before.
  • Google has also moved other AI-focused teams to DeepMind recently.

This reorganization follows Google’s previous move of its Gemini chatbot team to DeepMind. CEO Sundar Pichai noted this change was aimed at accelerating AI progress across the company. In a December meeting, Pichai stressed the importance of advancing in consumer-facing applications of Gemini by 2025, acknowledging there is significant work ahead to establish a leadership position in this space.

“Scaling Gemini on the consumer side will be our biggest focus [in 2025],” Pichai reportedly stated. “I think it’s really important we internalize the urgency of this moment, and [the] need to move faster as a company. The stakes are high.”
