U.S. Telecom Giants Secure Networks Post Salt Typhoon Cyber Threat

In recent developments, AT&T and Verizon have successfully secured their networks after facing threats from the China-linked cyberespionage group, Salt Typhoon. Both companies have reassured customers of their network’s safety, following the incidents. AT&T spokesperson Alexander Byers confidently stated that “no activity by nation-state actors” is currently detected in their networks.

Verizon echoed this assurance, with spokesperson Richard Young confirming that the cyber incident has been “contained.” Although he mentioned the involvement of a “highly respected cybersecurity firm” in confirming this containment, the firm’s name remains undisclosed.

  • AT&T noted that the breach targeted a small group of individuals of foreign intelligence interest.
  • Verizon reported specific targeting of high-profile government customers.

“Immediately upon learning of this incident, Verizon took several key actions to protect its customers and its network, including partnering with federal law enforcement and national security agencies, industry partners, and private cybersecurity firms,”

Vandana Venkatesh, Verizon’s Chief General Officer

This incident marks the first time AT&T and Verizon acknowledged impacts from the Salt Typhoon campaign. Initial reports emerged in October, revealing breaches in several major U.S. telecom networks aimed at gathering intelligence on American citizens.

U.S. officials have identified at least eight telecommunications providers targeted by these hackers, including Lumen (formerly CenturyLink) and T-Mobile. According to Reuters, Anne Neuberger, Deputy National Security Adviser for Cyber and Emerging Technology, announced on Friday that a ninth victim has been identified, although specifics remain undisclosed.

The attack even involved an administrator account with access to over 100,000 routers. This incident underscores the critical importance of robust cybersecurity measures within the telecommunications sector.

While the full extent of these breaches is still unfolding, both AT&T and Verizon have demonstrated swift action and cooperation with various agencies to safeguard their networks and customer information. As we continue to navigate an increasingly digital world, such vigilance against cyber threats is more crucial than ever.
