Apple’s Upcoming Update: Clarifying AI-Generated Notifications
In an effort to improve transparency, Apple announced on Monday that it will soon release a software update designed to better indicate when notification summaries are crafted by artificial intelligence. According to an Apple spokesperson, “A software update in the coming weeks will further clarify when the text being displayed is summarization provided by Apple Intelligence. We encourage users to report a concern if they view an unexpected notification summary.”
While Apple’s notification summaries can be quite helpful, they are not without their quirks. Users have noted that these AI-generated summaries can sometimes be amusing but often lead to mild confusion. A recent complaint from the BBC highlighted this issue when a notification inaccurately summarized a headline, suggesting that Luigi Mangione, charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, had shot himself.
“Apple Intelligence doesn’t summarize notifications it deems as sensitive,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s SVP of software engineering, during an interview with the Wall Street Journal last year.

The initiative by Apple is part of a broader move within the tech industry to enhance clarity around AI-generated content. For instance, Meta had to adjust its labeling for AI-edited images on its social networks after photographers raised concerns about misrepresentations. Similarly, Google has started adding disclosures for images created using its AI tools.
- Apple aims to make AI interactions more transparent for users.
- Other tech giants like Meta and Google are also working on similar transparency initiatives.
As technology continues to evolve, understanding and effectively labeling AI-generated content is crucial for user trust and accuracy. Apple’s upcoming update is a step in the right direction towards achieving this goal.
