How Culina Health is Revolutionizing Nutrition Care
Bridging the Gap in Nutrition Care
Vanessa Rissetto, a dedicated dietitian, has always been driven by a mission to foster healthier lifestyles. However, she recognized significant hurdles along the way, particularly within the Black community, which faces critical health challenges and a stark lack of care access. Highlighting that over 80% of registered dietitians in the U.S. are white, Vanessa felt a personal call to action. “As a Black woman, I wanted to diversify the industry to reach more Americans needing nutritional support,” she shared with TechCrunch.
The Birth of Culina Health
In response to this pressing need, Vanessa co-founded Culina Health in 2020 with fellow dietitian Tamar Samuels. Fast forward to today, the company has raised a $7.9 million Series A round led by Healthworx, associated with CareFirst insurance. Culina Health’s innovative platform connects patients with a network of registered dietitians offering virtual care for chronic disease prevention, wellness, and weight loss.
“Nutrition is vital to longevity and overall health, and it can be very sensitive for many individuals,” Rissetto emphasized. “We approach each patient with personalized solutions rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.”

Reaching More Patients
Currently, at least 70% of the U.S. population can access Culina Health’s services, which have already benefitted over 10,000 individuals through its unique methodology. Competing in this space with companies like Nourish and Foodsmart, Culina Health emphasizes culturally-affirming care that meets patients where they are.
A Promising Future
Reflecting on the fundraising journey, Vanessa described it as exhilarating and validating. The company attracted investors through word-of-mouth and inbound interest. “Culina’s mission stood out as unique and investment-worthy,” she noted.
- Key Investors: Collab Capital, Cake Ventures, GW Ventures
- Planned Initiatives: Implement AI platforms, enhance leadership team
With these new funds, Culina Health aims to expand its nutrition counseling services significantly. “The sky is the limit in providing the best possible care for our patients,” Vanessa concluded.
