Rooms: A New Era of Interactive 3D Design with Google Backing

Imagine stepping into a world where you can build your own interactive 3D spaces and mini-games, all with the ease of a few clicks and some coding magic. That’s precisely what Rooms, the innovative app developed by ex-Google employees, offers. Launched in beta in 2023, this app empowers users to create dynamic digital environments using a vast library of over 10,000 items, which can be customized with the programming language Lua.

In an exciting development, Rooms has now secured a $1 million investment from Google as part of a partnership deal that also grants early access to Google’s cutting-edge Gemini AI. Founded by industry veterans like Jason Toff, Bruno Oliveira, and Nick Kruge, Rooms isn’t just about crafting digital spaces. It’s a creative playground that combines art and coding with a TikTok-like browsing experience.

“Initially, creators were building simple spaces and mini-games using the technology, but more recent trends see people building even larger spaces and using the app to tell stories,”

Jason Toff told TechCrunch

One compelling example is from user “deodqueen,” who evolved from constructing standard rooms to crafting expansive interactive environments complete with animations. This evolution showcases the limitless potential of Rooms as both a creative outlet and an introduction to coding.

Rooms recently updated to version 3.0 on November 26, 2024. This update includes a new Actions editor that allows users to animate their rooms without needing to code. And that’s not all—Rooms is set to harness its partnership with Gemini to enhance user experiences through a text-to-speech mode. Soon, creators will be able to add narration and have characters speak in various tones—angry, calm, happy, you name it—adding even richer layers of storytelling.

  • Over 1 million rooms built on the platform
  • Inventory expanded to over 10,000 items for design
  • Quarter of a million registered users achieved last year

The company’s growth is evident in its ever-expanding inventory and user base. Although specific user engagement metrics remain undisclosed, Rooms has seen remarkable progress since its inception.

The recent funding round was structured as a SAFE (Simple Agreement for Future Equity), which provides Google the opportunity to invest in Rooms’ future Series A round. Previously, the startup had raised $10 million in seed funding from notable investors including Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), Adobe’s Scott Belsky, and Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger.

Currently available on both web and iOS platforms, Rooms continues to focus on enhancing user creativity without introducing monetization yet. With such strong backing and an innovative approach to digital design, Rooms is poised to redefine how we interact with virtual spaces.
