UK Competition Authority Leverages AI to Combat Bid-Rigging

The UK’s competition authority is not just focused on the expansive reach of Big Tech; it’s also tackling a more localized challenge—bid-rigging in public procurement contracts. This week, according to a report by the Financial Times, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has initiated a pilot program employing AI to sift through vast amounts of data. The goal? To detect instances where companies may have colluded in the bidding process, artificially inflating costs.

Sarah Cardell, the CMA chief, explained, “We know that procurement markets are at significant risk of bid-rigging. We’ve now got the capability to scan bidding data at scale, spot anomalies, and identify potential anti-competitive conduct.”

  • The pilot program applies AI technology to identify suspicious patterns in bidding data.
  • This initiative follows the CMA’s recent inquiry into bid-rigging for school roofing contracts.
  • Last year, the CMA imposed £60 million in fines against 10 construction firms for similar misconduct.

“We’ve now got the capability to be able to scan data at scale, bidding data at scale, to spot anomalies in that bidding data, and to identify areas of potential anti-competitive conduct.”

By utilizing AI, the CMA aims to ensure fair competition and protect public funds from being misused through collusion. This initiative is a testament to how technology can be harnessed to uphold integrity within marketplaces.
