Postman’s New AI Venture: A Leap into the Future of APIs

Since its inception in 2014, Postman, an India-based company, has carved out a significant niche for itself as a leading platform for building and utilizing APIs. Today, it boasts a robust user base comprising over 500,000 organizations worldwide. However, like many other SaaS enterprises, its valuation has reportedly dipped from the $5.6 billion peak it reached in 2021.

Despite this, Postman is boldly venturing into the AI arena with the introduction of an innovative AI agent builder. This tool seamlessly merges large language models with the Postman API platform and features a visual editor to empower even non-developers to construct and test AI agents.

Why AI Agents Matter for Postman

At first glance, Postman’s foray into AI agents might seem unconventional. Yet, as CEO and co-founder Abhinav Asthana explains, the move is strategic. To be effective, these agents need to interact with various services, a task inherently linked to APIs.

“Our customers actually started asking us about this. ‘Okay, this agent thing is kind of coming up. What are you guys doing about it?’ And we looked at the patterns in which they are stringing this together,”

– Abhinav Asthana

Asthana noted that APIs play a crucial role in this ecosystem. They facilitate interactions between different systems, whether homegrown or third-party. This makes Postman’s expertise in APIs pivotal as the landscape evolves.

Democratizing API-Centric Applications

A growing number of Postman’s users are non-developers who aspire to create simple applications centered around APIs. Asthana observed that embracing no-code solutions combined with AI and agents presents a powerful opportunity.

“So when AI technology started emerging, we had to test it out a lot. We saw like, ‘okay, can this be used?’ And it looks like no-code, plus AI, plus agents is a good combo to bring together,”

Building and Testing AI Agents

Postman’s extensive API network already features an API hub with contributions from over 18,000 companies. This network now enables users to create AI agents capable of interacting with these APIs. To ensure their efficiency and reliability, Postman is integrating testing and evaluation tools to assess prompts and inputs for supported models such as OpenAI and Google’s Gemini.

  • Cohere
  • Meta’s Llama

The Future of AI Agents at Postman

Currently, Postman’s AI agents are primarily focused on backend operations. While developers can use the service to enable front-end functionalities, Postman doesn’t yet offer a direct user interface for interacting with these agents. However, this might change over time as technology evolves.

“We are all very bullish on agent software, but I think the modalities in which we interact with these systems is also going to evolve,”

– Abhinav Asthana

A Unique Developer Experience

Postman’s journey into AI isn’t solitary; numerous players are vying for space in this realm. Nevertheless, Asthana believes that by offering an exceptional developer experience through its existing API hub, Postman can distinguish itself from large cloud providers who often prioritize cloud consumption over developer experience.

“In my opinion, the cloud providers always prioritize consumption of the cloud over developer experience,”

The Road Ahead: Pricing and Value Determination

The company is still navigating how best to price this new service. As Asthana notes, pricing will evolve as the team assesses the tangible value these agents bring to users.
