Spotify Ventures Beyond Music: Introducing Educational Courses
Spotify, a giant in the music streaming industry, is broadening its horizons to include educational courses alongside its existing offerings of music, podcasts, and audiobooks. On a recent announcement, the company unveiled one of its innovative features named “Courses,” designed to help users explore topics across various domains such as business, technology, lifestyle, music, and more.
Currently, this feature is being piloted in the U.K., according to Spotify. However, further indications suggest that it might soon debut in the U.S. Tech enthusiast and early adopter Chris Messina has already observed developments in the U.S. regarding these courses. His observations reveal that there will be courses tailored for tech-savvy individuals covering subjects like AI, Web3, the metaverse, and other digital tools.
New Features in Your Spotify Library
Messina also discovered a new filtering option within the Spotify Library that allows users to view “Podcasts & Courses” instead of just “Podcasts,” as it is currently displayed. While Spotify has not officially confirmed the launch of courses in the U.S., Messina managed to access the section via search. Nevertheless, he found the category pages empty, hinting that the feature is still under development.
“Spotify is working tirelessly to transform its platform into a hub for diverse audio experiences beyond music.”

A Strategy for Increased Revenue
For some time now, Spotify has been on a mission to be recognized for more than just music. By diversifying its audio offerings, Spotify aims to boost its revenue through various monetization strategies. These include advertisements in both audio and video podcasts (including AI ads), as well as paid “top-up” hours for audiobooks catered to subscribers who have exhausted their 15 free hours per month but wish to continue listening.
The company also competes with market leader Audible by offering a $10 per month standalone audiobook subscription. With the introduction of courses, Spotify sees potential for additional revenue streams by charging users for certain programs available on its platform.
Getting Started with Courses
To help users dive into this new feature, Spotify has curated a selection of recommended courses for beginners. Though currently piloting in the U.K., recent discoveries suggest these learning opportunities may soon reach audiences in the U.S., opening up new avenues for both learners and content creators.
